Legal Practitioners Admissions Board

The Legal Practitioners Admissions Board ('LPAB' or 'the Board') is the responsible for making recommendations to the Supreme Court in respect of applications for admission to the legal profession in Queensland. The Board's primary role is to consider the eligibility (academic qualifications and practical legal training) and suitability (good fame and character) of applicants for admission at a local, domestic and international level. In conjunction with the Chief Justice of Queensland, the Board takes an active role in approving academic and practical legal training courses offered by universities and educational institutes in Queensland. The Board's duties also include a consultative aspect, in that it considers proposals suggested by other stakeholders such as the Judiciary, the Legal Admissions Consultative Committee, the Queensland Government and the legal profession.

As a statutory body established under the Legal Profession Act 2007, the Board has a responsibility to carry out various legislative requirements necessary to allow it to fulfil its functions and comply with its obligations to the profession and the public.

The Board is a statutory body established under Chapter 7, part 7.5 of the Legal Profession Act 2007 and aims to support the judiciary, the legal profession, and the public interest by ensuring the integrity of those entering the legal profession.

Our services

The Board assists the Supreme Court of Queensland to make an order for persons seeking to obtain admission as a lawyer in Queensland. All persons seeking admission must make an application to the Supreme Court of Queensland.

Admission

The Supreme Court is responsible for the admission of lawyers in Queensland. It is assisted by the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board (LPAB), which issues recommendations as to the eligibility and suitability of applicants in the form of a certificate of compliance.

Fees and charges

Our fees and charges typically increase on 1 July each year. On 1 July 2024, our fees and charges were indexed by zero per cent (i.e. remain unchanged from 2023-24) in line with Government’s indexation policy. You can contact us to find out details about specific fees, charges or prices.
